When the Departments of Forensic Medicine and Public Health merged at the beginning of 2010, it was decided that the new institution be named after Otto E. A. Hjelt, an influential figure in the development of both fields in Finland.
Since Hjelt’s days, the fields have evolved and expanded considerably. Today, the Hjelt Institute provides undergraduate education in medicine, specialist education in forensic medicine, public health and occupational health, specific training in forensic dentistry and postgraduate research education. The Institute also offers teaching to students in other fields.
The Institute’s staffs performs forensic autopsies, forensic toxicological analyses, DNA analyses, paternity tests and clinical forensic examinations. The Institute’s research groups conduct research within extensive national and international cooperative networks in their respective fields with the help of funding from a wide range of national and international sources.
